How air fresheners work
Nov 07, 2025
Air fresheners work primarily by releasing fragrant chemical substances to mask and neutralize unpleasant odors in the air. Their working principle can be summarized as follows:
1. Volatile Compounds: Air fresheners contain volatile compounds such as essential oils and alcohols. These compounds spontaneously evaporate into the air, releasing a fresh scent.
2. Chemical Reaction: The compounds in air fresheners react chemically with pollutants in the air. For example, some compounds can react with sulfides and oxides, thus neutralizing odors.
3. Adsorption: Some components in air fresheners have adsorption capabilities, adsorbing harmful gases, particles, and odor molecules from the air.
4. High-Temperature Catalysis: Some air fresheners contain catalysts. When air is heated, the catalyst accelerates the chemical reaction, decomposing harmful substances in the air and producing fresher air.
