Application of polyurethane sealants

Nov 16, 2025

The main applications of polyurethane sealants are in the civil engineering and transportation industries. In Japan, for example, approximately 75-80% of polyurethane sealants are used in construction, 15% in automobiles and machinery manufacturing, and 5% in civil engineering and other fields.

Specific applications in construction include: sealing joints and construction joints in precast concrete components; sealing and caulking joints around wooden frames of doors and windows and between concrete walls; caulking and bonding joints in lightweight structures (such as curtain walls); waterproofing and caulking joints in balconies, swimming pools, and bathrooms; sealing connections in air conditioning and other systems; and sealing insulated double-glazed windows and window frames.

Applications of polyurethane sealants in the automotive industry include: sealing the assembly of car windows (mainly windshields) and assembling the car body with other components.

In civil engineering, polyurethane sealants are used for sealing expansion joints in high-grade roads, bridges, and airport runways; sealing joints in concrete, ceramic, and PVC sewer systems, underground gas pipelines, and electrical wiring conduits; and sealing connections in subway tunnels and other underground tunnels.

Polyurethane sealant can also be used for flexible joints of cables (such as underground cables), potting of electronic components to prevent dust and shock; and for bonding and sealing of insulation systems such as refrigerated trucks, cold storage insulation layers and low-temperature containers.
